Our Safety Protocols

Take off feeling confident and relaxed, knowing True South Flights upholds stringent safety procedures. The safety and comfort of our passengers is our highest priority, which is why we follow rigorous procedures to ensure a smooth ride for all. Let’s delve into some of our essential safety elements so you can rest assured while flying.

Comprehensive Briefings

Before taking off on your scenic flight, we will conduct a thorough safety briefing. We take this very seriously, as it is the best way to ensure you understand how to fly safely and how to respond in the unlikely event of an emergency. Our staff will carefully go over our safety protocols, including emergency exits, correct seatbelt usage, where life vests and oxygen masks are located, and how to use them. Although emergencies are extremely rare, we want passengers to feel prepared and secure. After the briefing, you will have sufficient time to ask questions or share concerns before we embark.

Premium Planes

At True South Flights, our fleet is built for safety. All five of our planes have been exhaustively researched and tested to ensure reliability. They hold terrific safety records and are constructed to withstand turbulence and other weather events. We conduct extensive maintenance inspections prior to all scenic flights in New Zealand, checking not only the engine but also control systems, seatbelts, and structural integrity. We uphold a consistent maintenance schedule which follows aviation compliance. This allows us to identify and resolve potential problems before they become a real risk.

Experienced Pilots

Worried about the pilot, not the plane? You shouldn’t be. Our pilots are qualified and have extensive experience operating scenic flights. They are skilled at flying in mountainous terrain and changeable weather conditions and are trained to handle emergency situations, including unforeseen mechanical failures. All of our flight crew conduct ongoing training and evaluations to ensure they remain flying at the optimal level. They also possess a wealth of knowledge of the area and will point out local landmarks and attractions during all scenic flights in New Zealand.

Weather Monitoring

Weather conditions can change rapidly in the mountains. Intense conditions such as snow, fog, precipitation, and wind gusts can impact flight safety by causing reduced visibility and turbulence. Our crew closely monitors weather conditions in the lead-up to your flight. If we believe it is unsafe to fly, we will call you one hour prior to departure to reschedule or confirm a refund. In summer and winter, we are able to safely fly approximately 70 per cent of the time. In autumn and spring, this number is reduced to 55 per cent. We will communicate effectively with you throughout the process to ensure you are up to date.

Children’s Safety

Bringing a little one along for the ride? We have child belts that loop through parent seat belts to keep your child safe, but you are welcome to bring a baby carrier to secure your infant instead. Children under the age of two fly free with True South Flights.

Passenger Assurance

Our goal is to alleviate any concerns you have so you can sit back, relax and enjoy the flight. We hope that by reading the above safety protocols, you will feel comfortable entrusting us with your scenic flight through our country’s remarkable landscape. We recommend researching our plane’s safety records and looking into the physics behind turbulence for additional peace of mind. Rest assured, the chance of rough weather or emergency situations is extremely unlikely.

Comfort First

Speaking of passenger comfort, we also recommend you prepare for your flight by bringing warm clothing, a waterproof jacket and comfortable shoes. This is especially important if you book our Milford Sound Fly-Cruise-Fly package, which involves a stunning boat ride through the beautiful Fiordland National Park.
