Milford Sound stretches 16 km inland from the Tasman Sea, surrounded by towering granite cliffs that rise up to 1,700 metres above sea level. The fiord was shaped during the last Ice Age, between 75,000 and 14,000 years ago, when a series of glaciers carved the dramatic valleys and waterways that define Fiordland today. Remnants of these glaciers can still be seen high in the mountains, where vivid blue icefalls contrast sharply with the dense rainforest below.
Receiving 7–8 metres of rainfall each year, Milford Sound is the wettest place in New Zealand. This constant rainfall sustains the lush rainforest that clings to the cliff faces, while New Zealand fur seals, and occasionally dolphins and penguins, inhabit the waters beneath.
