The History of Milford Sound

Milford Sound is one of thirteen fjords in the Fiordland National Park. The park covers 1.3 million hectares, an area larger than the Yellowstone and Yosemite National Parks combined.

Fiordland consists of plutonic-igneous rock, meaning it formed from molten magma, slowly cooled and solidified over millions of years to form a large mass of very hard granite. This mass was brought to the surface by tectonic plate action over millions of years, as the Australian plate and Pacific plate collide to raise the Southern Alps along the Alpine Fault Line.

This geological history is easily spotted from the air as the rock types change dramatically along the 80km flight path from Queenstown to Milford Sound. Clinging to the sides of the valley walls of Fiordland are native trees, including Mountain and Silver Beech. The forest floor is densely packed with New Zealand ferns and undergrowth. These forests are untouched and teem with distinctive bird calls from our native Kea, Tui and Korimako.
