Tasman Glacier Heli Hike: A Winter Adventure to Remember

Are you ready to embrace winter like never before? If you’ve been searching for a truly incredible alpine experience to add to your list, a Tasman Glacier Heli Hike is the perfect option.

Nestled within Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park in the South Island, Tasman Glacier is the longest glacier in New Zealand, so not only is it worth the trip, but it also offers an incredible opportunity to witness one of the country’s surreal natural wonders. So, grab a couple of adventurous friends or family members, and gear up for a remarkable winter adventure to remember. Let’s go!

Winter Magic on the Tasman Glacier

Tasman Glacier Heli Hike by true South Flights

The Tasman Glacier Heli Hike with True South Flights is truly one of New Zealand’s most memorable alpine experiences, and here’s why.

The colder season is the best time for a glacier adventure. The Tasman Glacier is at its most spectacular during this time of year because it transforms into a pristine winter wonderland. Along with a more peaceful atmosphere, winter offers clearer views, better ice formations, deeper ice caves, and stable conditions for exploration.

Being prepared is key, and you’ll want to ensure you’re wearing the correct clothing to avoid serious discomfort. While it’s absolutely beautiful to witness, alpine conditions are harsh during winter. Consider investing in high-quality thermal base layers to keep you toasty warm, and we provide you with the rest of the required equipment, such as a waterproof jacket and pants, proper hiking boots and socks, a pair of gloves and a beanie.

This isn’t just a normal hike, but a once-in-a-lifetime journey across a piece of ancient history that was formed thousands of years ago.

About the Tasman Glacier Heli Hike

One of our most popular winter tours, the Tasman Glacier Heli Hike, is similar to the Franz Josef tour and kicks off with a one-hour fixed-wing flight from Queenstown to Mount Cook. This is just the beginning of a day filled with spectacular views and endless scenery.

  • Spectacular Glacier Views

Flying over the Southern Alps, you’ll have a front-row opportunity to see dozens of glaciers. Did you know that the Southern Alps are home to over 3,000 glaciers? During the scenic flight, you’ll be able to spot Tasman Glacier, along with a few others such as Fox Glacier and Franz Josef Glacier. You won’t want to miss capturing some amazing photography, so remember to bring your camera along with you!

  • Helicopter Scenic Flight

Once you arrive at the Mt Cook airstrip, you’ll meet your helicopter pilot and our guiding partners, Alpine Guides. They will provide you with a quick safety rundown and supply you with necessary equipment, including waterproofs, crampons, boots, and socks.

You’ll then move up onto the glacier via helicopter on another scenic flight over Tasman Terminal Lake, landing right in the middle of the glacier. If you thought the glacier was beautiful, wait until you see the lake. With crystal clear turquoise water and icebergs, you’ll feel as if you’ve stepped into a mystical wonderland.

  • Unforgettable Glacier Hike

Now that you’ve made it to the glacier, it’s time to explore for two hours on the ice, discovering ancient ice caves and immersing yourself in the natural wonders of the South Island’s most iconic glacier.

There are a few things you should keep in mind. While you don’t necessarily need to be an avid hiker, this tour requires a moderate level of fitness. If you are comfortable walking for up to two hours, this tour is suitable for you. Our guides will be with you throughout the entire hike, and they are very familiar with the landscape and know which areas to avoid. Your crampons will also provide you with extra traction and safety so you can explore the glacier with confidence.

What Makes This Tour So Special?

The Tasman Glacier Heli Hike is something many people add to their bucket list adventures and is a journey worth taking, wherever you come from around the world. With an exciting mixture of both air and ice exploration in one tour, there’s something around every corner that will leave you speechless. You’ll be able to leave the tour saying you’ve stepped foot on New Zealand’s longest glacier, and that’s something you won’t get anywhere else.
