Franz Josef or Tasman Glacier Heli Hike
Our Glacier Heli-Hike has become one of True South Flights more popular tours as it allows you to enjoy all that the Aoraki/Mt Cook National Park glaciers has to offer all within a day.
The one-hour fixed-wing flight from Queenstown to Franz Josef or (Mt Cook)Tasman Glacier is the start of a day filled with spectacular scenery as we fly over the Southern Alps home to over 3000 small glaciers. Franz Josef Glacier is situated on the western face of Aoraki/ Mt Cook and the Tasman Glacier is on the eastern side. The weather in this mountainous region can be very changeable with up to 10m of rain falling particularly on the western side. We offer similar tours to both glaciers to ensure a better chance that you will have a fantastic day hiking on a glacier. We have the flexibility with our guiding partners to be able to alternate from one side to the other should the weather not be suitable.
On arrival at either Mt Cook or Franz Josef we will accompany you to your check in with our helicopter and guiding partners, Alpine Guides, who will provide you with all your necessary equipment and a safety briefing.
The experienced guides will then take you into a deep part of the glacier via a scenic helicopter flight. The helicopter passes over the deep crevasses of the icefalls and waterfalls to land at the upper Franz Josef icefall, or a scenic helicopter flight over the Tasman terminal lake that was formed back in the 1980s with a stunning view of Mt Cook ( New Zealand tallest mountain) in the background and land at the middle of the Tasman Glacier. There you’ll will be fitted with crampons for the two hours on the glacier ice, exploring ices caves and seeing the natural, ever-changing wonder of the glacier in South Island of New Zealand.
Both the Franz Josef and Tasman glaciers offer very similar experiences and you can be assured that you will not be disappointed with either option. The Tasman is much longer at 23km and the Franz Josef is steeper but when you hike the glacier there is little to separate one from the other. We suggest you book your preferred option but be flexible on the day to change as the weather determines.
Minimum of 2 passengers to confirm for this tour however if you are only 1 person please contact us as we will endeavour to put you with another tour.

Tasman Glacier Heli-hikeThe Tasman Glacier is the largest glacier in the Mt. Cook National Park at 26km long. The entire heli-hike trip features outstanding views of the Haast Glacier, the Hochstetter Glacier and the Ball Glacier, which flow from Mt. Cook into the Tasman Glacier. Mt. Cook and Mt. Tasman are also visible during the hike, towering 2700 meters above the glacier walk ice. The helicopter flight up to the drop-off point is also twice as long as the flight to Fox or Franz Josef Glaciers. Now available year-round! The Tasman Glacier Heli-hike is less weather dependent than the Franz Josef Glacier Heli-hike, due to being shielded from the west coast by Mt. Cook.
